M: ....write this down,"essence of foe"! E,S,S,E,N,C,E,.."essence"..."of" O,F, "foe", F,O,E.in unscrambled form. Two words! And 9:20 we'll ask you to call us up and unscramble "essence of foe". At that time, if you're first quick caller to do so, you will actually win. Let's take a call right now.
You're on the air with Mark and Kim...Can you unscramble "essence of foe"?
J: Who? Me?
M: Heeey! It's Birthday Boy, Josh Groban!!
K: Johhhhhhsh! How are you?
J: Woooh, hooh!
K: Did we wake you up?
J: No, No! I was awake! I swear! Really, I was umm...
M&K: Yeah, yeah....
K: What did you do last night?
J: Oh, last night? I um....finished up some e-mails, and um...played with
the dog a little bit....mmmm...
K: Oh, boy! The exciting life of a 25 year-old....
J: I had a blast!
K: You were 24 years old last night. It's the last...you're...you're now a quarter of a century...and you're answering e-mails and playing with the dog!
J: No.....no... I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. I went out with some friends. I had a good time. But tonight, tonight, you know, we're...I'm...
I'm gonna go out with friends and family. We're gonna have a good time.
K: ..just dinner or what? A nice dinner or...
J: Dinner...you know....I, I...tell you what I'm gonna do. I, ummm...When I  did the Oscar's last year, last year the Oscars fell on my birthday, so....I didn't get to do anything..
M: That's right. You got to sing at the Oscars.
K: That's right! I remember that...
J: And I got to sing at the Oscars, but we got these CRRRRAZY gift baskets.
Just ridiculously stupid gift baskets. And I was so busy this year that I hardly got to really call in for anything that was in the gift baskets. But.....
M: (laugh!!)
K:  We've gotta teach you things, man!
M: So, so...you're gonna do that for your 25th birthday!
J: I know, I know. I ..
M: You know, I got this really cool razor phone...I need to figure how this thing works!
J: On all the cards, it was like..."Please have your manager or personal assistance call in to retrieve your gift.." and I'm like ..."ummm, you know what? I'm just gonna call this thing and see what happens...
K: Did they have a... expiration....like a year expiration or anything on them?
J: Yes! And they all expire today. So...
K: You gotta go tonight! You do!
J: So....ha ha...so I'm gonna probably spend most of the day frantically calling to get some of that free ... ummm...
K: Free stuff!
J: ... free swag. But ummm...
M: Listen, Josh! Those bags were worth 35 thousand dollars! I mean, it's
insane!
J: I know....but..
M: Do you really need the laser eye surgery though?
J: I don't need the laser eye surgery. But I am gonna take the...
M: What about that eyelift? That the...Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon that everybody ....they always had these wild things in there and you go, "Dude! Wh...what!? ...I don't need that!"
J: Ha-ha-ha! You know? I don't know.....Maybe...may be people like ......
but umm... not yet, I don't think. But ummm, there was a steak dinner in there that I'm gonna do tonight. So that's what I'm doing.
K: Now, what about presents? What kind of presents...and what do you really appreciate when someone gives you ..
J: Oh, you know, something that, just, you know, I know that they put a lot
of heart into it. You know, I've just been so lucky. I hate getting
presents. I loooove giving presents, I mean...I just ...
M: My birthday is July 30th.
K: It's hard to receive.
J: Excellent! Excellent!
K: If you're not too used to...It's hard to be able to receive...Now I'm gonna help you practice, "Thank you very much! That was very thoughtful of you."
J: Ha-ha-ha..
K: Try that.
J: "Thank you very much...That was very ..." Umm...it's ...hard...
K: You know, it's the sincerity we need to work on...
J: I know.
M: That's all. Just, just you know, work on...
K: "I only.." How about this one? "I only have five of those already!"
J&K&M: Ha-ha-ha!!!
J: Yeah, Hey, I think I got that in the Oscar baskets.
K: Ohhhhh, noooo!
M: "Hey, you know what? I think my little brother who happens to have the same birthday as me, he’ll enjoy that too!"
J: That's true! Isn't that scary?
M: Josh, your brother's...your brother's 21. I mean, that should be a big birthday.
J: He is 21.
K: That is so strange...
J: You guys are in Vegas, right?
K: Yes, we are.
M: Yeah, listen. Tell him that...
J: I'm gonna take him to Vegas.
K: If he's 21. Yeah....
M: I think that'd be a good idea and tell him he can...tell him he can throw away the fake ID that he's been using for the last three years now too...
J: Yeah, ha-ha...exactly...
K: You've performed here in Vegas, haven't you?
J: I have, yeah. Ah, twice actually at Mandalay Bay. Yeah, it's been fun.
K: In 20 years from now, you'll take over for Celine, right?
J&K: Ha-ha...
M: Oh....Could you imagine?
J: Wao...I, you know?
J: I have to see about that. But ummm, at the moment, I feel like ummm... I feel like moving around little bit more than that, but umm...maybe...
M: Now listen...
K: So, so you're not tired of touring yet...
J: No, no, no, I love it. I actually kinda miss it. I mean when I got off the road, there was that, there was that kind of, you know, pat on the back, you know "Wao! we did it!" you know, "Time to...time to take a break." and then, and then it just kind of sinks in, "Oh, man! That was fun!" you know?
M&K: Yeah.
M: Yeah, I know. That's the way it always goes.
J: But no, I'm busy working on stuff...
M: Then he thinks to himself, "You know I was gonna have a quiet birthday, then I got these two obnoxious idiots calling me up at 8:30 in the morning...
J: Ah-ha-ha! You’re cruel....
K: No, no, no, but he knows we love him.
J: Oh, absolutely...
M: Hey, listen, Josh. I'm also noticing on joshgroban.com...
J: Oh..
M: ... that there's a charity auction for the Josh Groban Foundation which actually ends today, and there's some unique personal items that you have put up...
J: Yes.
M: ...that you're selling to fans, that they can bid on until tonight.
J: You know, the fans have just been, so incredible. And every year they kind of, you know, it started with them, kind of creating, this, you know, "it's his birthday, let's do an auction." and so...
K: That's really neat.
J: We've continued it, every year I tried to put on few things there, and... it raised ton of money there. It's just umm.. It's a great thing.
M: You know, and then, and I know that you had done this earlier where someone actually got a, a call from you. You did this like a month ago or something.
J: Yes.
M: What are those calls like? You call up and then say, "Hi, this is..."
J: Well, they're a little later in the day...and ah.
M: Yeah, yeah..
K: Ha-ha....
M: All right, all right....
J: I 'm just kidding...
K: Sorry....
J: And..
K: We thought you were in New York or something.
J: Ha-ha..
M: Aren't you in London? Isn't this really 4 O'clock in the afternoon?
J: I'm eating dinner...no...
M: So you call'em up...
J: I call them up and, and say "hey" you know..it's umm...it's funny, I never know, I never know what to expect, you know, if it's gonna be somebody who's just really excited or ....a lot of, a lot of times, they're just very "matter of fact", they're very, they've got their questions, and umm, and...
K: They're stunned.
J: ...we just have a good time chatting, you know. It's....it's very...
K: So Josh,
J: I get nervous.
K: When can we look forward to a new album comin' up from you?
J: You know...
K: Yeah, new music, mister!
J: Good question. I'm actually really glad I got to come on here because it's a...I feel like I've been taking forever to make this album, and it's um...It's stuff I'm so so proud of, and I feel like this is kind of a journey that, that has been really an amazing one. But I want it to be absolutely perfect and umm...you know, the fans have been really really patient but it's really really getting there. It's almost, almost done. And...
M: Give us a flavour of it.
J: Sometimes...
M: As far as pop, as far as the, you know, more traditional stuff that you have done, the opera, or whatever you....
J: Well....there's definitely...I think there's gonna be classical elements to it. I mean, that's something I love to do, but on this album I really definitely wanted to , to kinda, expand and try some world music and try some world sounds and try some more...
K: Oh...
J: ....eclectic flavors and actually they were talking about.... I actually did go on the website the other day and they were talking about something that they found out about that I did in NYC. I was working with a group called " Lady Smith Black..." who are this an African vocal group, and uh... and it just went so well. And it was such an amazing experience for me. And uh, Good Morning America was there to tape it, and it was ....it's a song that's very very important. So it's....that's gonna be a lot of fun.
And um.. but ...I think there's times you have to understand, even after the album is done, it takes, it takes a record label about three months, after the album is turned in, mixed and finished, to..to get it out there. So...
K: Do you have a date on it? Do you have a date on it yet?
J: Not an exact date. But I'm looking at...
K: No... Will you come in? Will you come in to studio? When it gets done?
J: Oh, of course they will! We have a blast! You know? We, uh, we...ha-ha.
I spend good time, everybody sitting around....
M: Well, this next time, I think what we're gonna do is, we're gonna do a "Crisco Twister Game"...
K & J: Ha-ha-ha!
M: I don't think we've ever done that with anybody.
K: I don't thinks so.
M: N.
J: I'll bring a jump suit....
M: An now. now that you're a quarter century, you know, we can start doing some of those things you wished you'd done younger but you naver did.
J: That's true. I...I'm a little bit ???? right now.
M: So, year. That'll be...
K: Well, Josh HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you ...
M: That'll be one of those things...
J: Thank hou guys so much. And, and Happy Anniversary to you guys. I mean..
M: Well, thank you! Yeah.
J: Such an incredible achievement and star on the Walk of Fame...
M: You're not gonna...you're not gonna say how old you were when we started, are ya? You weren't gonna go there.
K: No. He was in kindergarten when we started.
M: No. he wasn't in kindergarten...
K: but that's OK. Thant's OK. You know what, we, we've gotta hear some Josh Groban music here.
M: Hey, listen, Josh! Will do that and thank you for the info about the new CD coming out. And a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to both you and your brother.
J: Oh, thank you very much.
M: And you guys have, just have a great time whatever you choose to do. And
just relax and have fun.
J: Yeah, I know. It's gonna be great.
M: You have, you have worked ?????
J: It's probably gonna come out late summer, so ...
K: OK, late summer. All right. We'll look forward to it. Josh, HAPPY BIRTHDAY from Mark & Kim show and all Southern California and Grobanites listening this morning.
